Paul Röttger is celebrating a double anniversary this year: he is the director of the equally old theatre house that he founded in 1988 – then the rotterdamscentrumvoortheater, now Theater Babel Rotterdam. The party is celebrated with a theatre choreography, which will premiere on 13 October: ‘Piazza della vita’.
They are the only inclusive company in the world that receives a structural subsidy. He hopes that more groups will work inclusive. You have to have specific qualities for it. First of all, there must be room in your heart for people who are different. Then you have to be able to cope with all kinds of restrictions, and also have knowledge of them. I myself think that I have become a richer and milder person by working with this group of actors, and hopefully also a better artist. You get much more insight into the complexity of the human being, and learn to put things into perspective better.
